PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Will Ferrell gets additional points here for risk taking, but not much in the way of enthusiastic applause.

For a second straight time, he uses his A-list comedy superstardom to try something a little smaller and a little different. But whereas his previous outing, Everything Must Go, remained interesting and justified if not triumphant, his latest starring vehicle stalls and sputters.

Casa de Mi Padre (?My Father?s House?) is a parody of Mexican soap operas and westerns, a Spanish-language American comedy in the style of an overly dramatic Latin American telenovela.

But it suffers from a bad case of stretch-a-sketch syndrome.

That is, while it would work splendidly as an eight-minute ?Saturday Night Live? sketch ? no surprise there, given that nearly everyone behind the scenes was at one point connected with that TV series.

But distended to even modest feature length (85 minutes), it becomes an oppressively repetitive, one-note affair.

Ferrell ? whose American-accented Spanish sounds impeccable and easily passes muster ? stars as Armando Alvarez, the dimwitted heir to a modern-day Mexican ranch on which he has lived and worked his entire life.? But the ranch is in severe financial difficulty.

Then Armando?s kid brother, Raul, played by Diego Luna, who?s always been good at everything Armando is bad at, shows up with his gorgeous fianc?e, Sonia, played by Genesis Rodriguez.

A successful international businessman, Raul pledges to settle all of his father?s debts. But it turns out that Raul?s business dealings are not legitimate.

To save their father?s ranch, the Alvarezes find themselves in a war with Mexico?s most feared drug lord, Onza, played by Gael Garcia Bernal.

And to further complicate matters, Armando falls at first glance for Sonia, who shares a history with Onza.? So, not only will betrayal and violence be on the menu, but love and sex will crop up as well.

Uh-oh.

Debuting director Matt Piedmont, a writer alum from ?SNL,? pushes his cast into grotesquely broad line readings, exaggerated facial expressions, and endlessly sustained bouts of raucous laughter, and sends up the shoddy production values of the underfunded telenovelas and low-budget westerns by making sure that the backdrops, the livestock, the ?locations,? and just about everything that fills the frame is either cheap or fake.

In other words, the supremely silly Casa de Mi Padre isn?t just over the top, it?s over the moon.

Ferrell also served as a producer, along with Adam McKay and Andrew Steele (another ?SNL? alum), who wrote the screenplay.

As distinctive a comedic on-screen presence as Ferrell has been, as much hearty entertainment as he has been responsible for providing, he richly deserves leeway as he experiments along with his collaborators.? But somebody on this project should have noticed just how far inside the casa the joke remains throughout this spoof.

Even for fans of the telenovelas, who will get the primary joke much more readily than the uninitiated, this one stops being funny pretty quickly.

So we?ll translate 2 stars out of 4 for this subtitled and subpar demonstration of Ferrell?s ?free will.?? Casa de Mi Padre is a glorified skit that runs out of gas long before the halfway point.

NAJAF, Iraq (AP) ? An exhibit of wax statues depicting some of Shiite Muslims' most beloved clerics, aimed at paying tribute to this Iraqi holy city's contributions to culture, has been dipped in controversy as some Sunnis decry the figures as heretical.

The wax sculptures are due to be displayed at a museum in Najaf, but even before the exhibit opens, some Sunni Muslims ? rarely shy about highlighting their religious differences with Shiites ? are denouncing them as a violation of Islamic law. Even some Shiite clerics are a bit leery.

"Even those dead people whose statues are displayed (would have) disapproved of this," said Ali Bashir al-Najafi, a spokesman for one of Iraq's top Shiite clerics.

Some Muslim clerics of both sects interpret Islamic law as forbidding most depictions of people and even animals in art or other likenesses. They believe such likenesses could be perceived as false idols and, therefore, taboo.

The wax figures portray bearded clerics in turbans and politicians in freshly ironed suits. They include Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Sadiq al-Sadr, who was beloved by Iraq's Shiites for encouraging Friday prayers during Saddam Hussein's regime. He was assassinated by Saddam's agents in 1999. Also depicted is Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, who was born in Najaf and was Lebanon's top Shiite cleric until his death in 2010.

All of the figures were either born, studied or buried in Najaf, located 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Baghdad. The city of roughly one million people is home to Iraq's religious Shiite leadership, called the marjaiyah, and holds the tomb of Imam Ali, who Shiites consider the Prophet Muhammed's rightful successor.

The exhibit is the brainchild of Sheik Ali Mirza, a Shiite cleric. He said he was inspired during a visit to a wax museum in Beirut that included a likeness of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Mirza said the figures in Najaf are so lifelike visitors sometimes "raise their hands to salute the statues as if they were alive." He said the statues are all Shiite because the exhibit will be in Najaf, which he called "the Vatican of Shiite Muslims."

The wax figures were originally intended to be part of festivities connected to the city being named the 2012 Islamic Capital of Culture. But the cultural arm of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation ? the grouping of Islamic nations once known as the Organization of the Islamic Conference ? announced recently that the festival has been canceled at the Iraqi government's request.

The event had already been beset by accusations of mismanagement and corruption. But the wax figures are not going to just melt away. Officials said the figures will still be displayed at a Najaf museum.

The cleric knows the likenesses won't be to everybody's liking.

"The museum is a new idea and people need time to get used to it," he said.

But some in Iraq's Sunni minority are not getting used to it, reflecting the religious divide that is never far from the surface here. Even more so than Shiism, Sunni Islam has historically frowned on depictions of the human form. Many Iraqi Sunnis look down on the country's Shiite majority because they allow depictions of Muslim figures in banners, flags or other religious paraphernalia. For Sunni extremists, this is just further proof of their accusation that Shiites are not true Muslims.

Sunni extremists have sharply criticized the statues and Shiites who visit them.

"Believe it or not: wax museum for the turbaned in Najaf," sneered a headline on one Sunni website.

"Idols reached Najaf," thundered another.

"The pre-Islam era of paganism is returning," warned a comment on another website.

A leading Sunni cleric was more diplomatic.

"It is not right to erect statues whether made of wax or of anything else. That is haram (religiously forbidden) because it is an emulation of God's creation," said Sheik Ahmed al-Taha who is the preacher of the Abu Hanifa mosque in Baghdad, a key Sunni house of worship. "It is similar to what heathens do."

Some Shiites are also uneasy. While Shiism allows more latitude for the depiction of faces or busts, the full-body wax figures are for many a step too far. Al-Najafi said it is OK to have half a statue but not the full body.

The hardline Shiite movement known as the Sadrists, followers of the late ayatollah, want the statue of al-Sadr taken down.

"The people behind this museum bear the responsibility before God," said Hakim al-Zamili, a senior Sadrist lawmaker.

Mirza is careful not to speak against the marjaiyah, whose edicts are practically law in this Shiite majority country. But he points out that various Shiite clerics have different ideas about the statues' appropriateness.

The statues have already become a hit with some Shiites. Curious onlookers have flocked to a religious school owned by Mirza where the statues are being kept until the museum opens.

"I am very impressed. I did not expect something like this. They seem so real," one visiting cleric, Sheik Muhsen al-Najafi, told Mirza during a visit.

An activist in Najaf, Qassim Abdul-Sadda, said he was not very religious but went to see the wax statues about a month ago out of curiosity.

He took pictures of himself next to the statues and posted them on the Internet. When some of his friends realized they were wax figures, they called the statues "haram," he said.

But he likes them.

"It is good to preserve the heritage of Najaf in this way by showing this generation and generations to come the scholars who had a great contribution to the history and culture of Najaf," he said.

The structural integrity of the foods we eat is often based on unhealthy saturated fats. New research may allow food scientists to remove the bad fats without destroying texture

Not all fats are created equal. Scientists have known since the 1950s that replacing saturated fats with unsaturated ones can have profound health benefits. Diets that are high in solid fats, such as butter and animal fat, lead to elevated risks of cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. But it has been difficult to phase out saturated fats?not only are they are delicious, they are also important components of a food's structure. Without saturated fat, ice creams are just sugary liquids and a hot dog has the consistency of a pet?s chew toy.

Scientists learned that lesson the hard way in 2009, when they tried replacing frankfurters' saturated fats with oils, which are healthier than solid fats. "If you try it with just oil, the frankfurters have a very tough, leathery property," says Alejandro Marangoni, who studies food and soft materials science at the University of Guelph in Canada.

In a paper published March 1 in Food and Function, Marangoni and his colleagues found a way to make oils solid but still healthy. By mixing regular canola oil with molecules of ethyl cellulose, the researchers trapped the oil within a solid scaffolding. When used in hot dogs, this gel replaced saturated fats without sacrificing texture. "It behaves as if it were solid beef fat," Marangoni says.

Of course, we've heard similar promises before. Although artificial sweeteners were marketed as a way to eat sweets without gaining weight, subsequent studies found that these indigestible sugars may make it more difficult for a consumer to control his or her body weight. Similarly, the fat substitute olestra replaced shortening in some fast foods, potato chips and other products; because olestra is indigestible, consumers could eat the greasy food without any caloric comeuppance. Unfortunately, several side effects?including vitamin malabsorption and "anal leakage"?made olestra fall far short of the hype.

The makers of the ethyl cellulose gel say they do not anticipate such problems. Canola oil is widely used in food products, and ethyl cellulose is chemically similar to the cellulose fibers we eat in fruits, vegetables and wheat bran. Similar to regular cellulose, ethyl cellulose is an indigestible chain of repeating glucose molecules; the only difference is that the hydroxyl groups of ethyl cellulose are modified into ethyl ether groups. Although ethyl cellulose is not found naturally in plants, "it would be similar to eating a small bit of paper," explains Eckhard Fl?ter, a food scientist from the Technical University of Berlin. Ethyl cellulose is "generally recognized as safe" according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and is commonly used in pharmaceutical capsules and as a food additive in milk products and baked goods.

The researchers are not claiming to be able to turn hot dogs into a diet food. The modified frankfurters have a similar greasy feel and contain the same total grams of fat, but those fats are healthier unsaturated ones rather than the artery-clogging variety.

Although other scientists have attempted to gel oils to structurally replace saturated fats, "the beauty here is that they created a food application where the perceived properties for consumers are not significantly changed," Fl?ter says.? Previous attempts could not replicate desired textures.

Marangoni's team discovered the gelling properties of ethyl cellulose by trial and error, and no one had expected ethyl cellulose to work so well. When fats solidify in nature, their molecules crystallize, forming spongelike structures that contain oils within the pores. In contrast, ethyl cellulose gels form spaghettilike, fibrous structures around the oil globules.
